How to Become a More Mindful Shopper

We are continually looking for ways that our community can help. The fight for racial justice, the despicable manner in which our planet and animals are treated are just a few of the many critical issues we face. Since we are an organization focused on furniture & home goods, we constantly look out for shopping methods that support both black-owned businesses and those that honor the planet and animals. We search for companies that use their proceeds for good. And, by “good” we mean supporting socially & politically progressive efforts. That’s how we found Progressive Shopper & The Nile List! It’s free and we had to share it with you.

What is PROGRESSIVE SHOPPER and why do you need to download it ASAP?!

Well, corporations spend millions of dollars each year funding political candidates and their committees. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) collects this data and makes it available to the public. Up until recently, this data has been buried in large databases that aren’t very user-friendly.

Progressive Shopper has taken the data directly and put it in context – letting you know who companies support and how that compares to their competitors.

Once installed, the Progressive Shopper Google Chrome extension helps you understand whether or not you are supporting a brand that is aligned with your values! We actually utilize this tool for VeganDesign.org. It helps us weed out the less progressive brands so that we’re only recommending those with which we share a higher goal. Test it out HERE.

On top of that, we also recently discovered THE NILE LIST! They are a website that is dedicated to supporting & promoting black-owned businesses. They even offer a cruelty-free & vegan filter so you can discover brands that offer products that align with your humane & healthy values. It’s also a way that you can support small businesses. It’s important to practice purchasing from small businesses because there’s a hardworking individual behind the brand who is trying to support themselves & their family! - Thank you for having a purpose & joining our community in making change. 💚

ProgressIve shopper works with a ‘color scheme’ to make your web searches easier to understand. Here’s what each color means:

BLUE – a company and its employees give primarily to Democrats (60% or greater)

PURPLE – a company and its employees give relatively equally to Democrats and Republicans (40% to 60%)

RED – a company primarily gives to Republicans (only 40% or less to Democrats)
